Leather Care

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR LEATHER PRODUCT:

1. If your product has wallets, they will stretch but they will not shrink. For wallets, if it seems like your pocket will only fit one or two cards, give it time. Leather will pretty much stretch to whatever you want to fit over time by slowly adding one card at a time with use over a few weeks. Once you stretch a pocket to fit multiple cards, it may become loose and not hold only one card very well anymore. Keep this in mind when planning which cards go where.

2. Leather needs moisture and care just like you do! If you do not provide moisture to leather, it will become dry and cracked. Wallets and other everyday use products will get some moisture from the natural oils on your skin and hands. Nonetheless, it is best practice to give your products a good coat of conditioner about every 6 months.

  • My personal favorite conditioning product is Smith’s Leather Balm, and it can be found through their website or Amazon. Smith’s is locally made in York, Maine and is made of all natural ingredients that are good for your leather AND good for you.
  • When applying balm, rub a solid coating of balm with your finger or a clean rag on all outer surfaces of the leather. Once a coating has been applied evenly to your product, use a microfiber cloth or a soft bristled shoe brush to rub back and forth over the product to heat up the balm through friction and help it soak into the product. This is called “buffing”. If you follow these steps, your product will continue looking healthy and ready for years and years of continued use!
